Diamond Education: What You Need to Know

Understanding Diamonds

How to Choose a Diamond

You don't need to be a gemologist to choose a beautiful diamond. You just need to know what actually matters and what doesn't. This guide will walk you through everything, simply.

The Only Thing That Really Matters: How It Looks on You

Before we get into grades and certifications, here's the truth, the right diamond is the one that catches your eye and makes you feel something. Technical specs exist to protect you, not to complicate your decision. So read this guide, but trust your instincts too.

Lab-Grown vs Natural Diamonds

Lab-grown diamonds are chemically, physically, and optically identical to mined diamonds. Same carbon structure. Same hardness. Same sparkle as mined diamonds. Same fire and brilliance.

A jeweler cannot tell the difference with the naked eye, only specialized lab equipment can. The difference is how they're made: one forms deep in the earth over billions of years, the other is grown in a laboratory in a matter of weeks. Both are real diamonds.

At Bijoux Luxo, we carry both lab-grown and natural diamonds. We believe in both, we simply chose lab-grown because it allows us to offer certified, high-quality diamonds at a price point that makes sense for everyday wear, not just once-in-a-lifetime occasions.

The 4Cs of Diamonds

Every diamond is graded on four things. Here's what each one actually means for you:

CUT: This Is the One That Matters Most

Cut is what makes a diamond sparkle. It determines how well a diamond reflects light. A well-cut diamond will look bigger and more brilliant even at a lower carat weight. Cut is the most important of the 4Cs. When in doubt, prioritize cut over everything else. What to look for: "Excellent" or "Very Good" cut grade.

COLOR: How White the Diamond Looks

Diamond color is graded from D (colorless) to Z (yellowish tint). The closer to D, the rarer and more valuable. Most of our diamonds fall in the D-F range — colorless to near-colorless. You don't need a D, most people can't tell the difference between D and F with the naked eye. What to look for: D to F range. You'll get a beautiful white diamond without overpaying.

CLARITY: How Clean It Is Inside

Clarity measures how clean a diamond is from inclusions (tiny natural imperfections). Clarity grades tell you how visible they are. Grades range from Flawless (FL) to Included (I). We recommend VS1-SI1 range — excellent quality where inclusions are invisible to the naked eye. What to look for: VS1 to SI1 range. These look perfectly clean to the eye and offer the best value.

CARAT: The Weight, Not the Size

Carat refers to a diamond's weight, not its size. A well-cut 0.90ct diamond can appear larger than a poorly cut 1.00ct diamond. Don't chase carat numbers, focus on how the diamond actually looks. What to look for: Choose the carat weight that fits your budget after you've prioritized cut.

IGI Certification

What is IGI Certification?

Every diamond we sell comes with a certificate from the International Gemological Institute (IGI) — one of the world's most respected independent gemological laboratories. Your IGI certificate confirms the exact cut, color, clarity, and carat weight of your diamond, along with a unique identification number.

This is your proof of quality and your documentation for insurance purposes.
